Be Grateful

One of the most important life lessons I have learned from spending time with residents at the nursing home is to be grateful.

Most of the residents cannot walk and are wheelchair bound. They voice how they wish they could walk again. When I arrive, I am asked about the weather since the majority of them do not leave the facility, not even for air. Cherish being able to walk around your home, neighborhood, and stores, and breathe in nature in your yard, camping, or a beach.

Everything is scheduled, and it needs to be for the staff and especially those with dementia. But it becomes tiresome. So, if you have an unscheduled day take joy in knowing that the day is truly yours.

Be grateful for the little things that you do have, or can do. When we lose those abilities, that is when we miss them most.
